Diesel at Shs7,290: Recalculating Backup Power and Fleet Costs

Diesel in Kampala has risen 55% in six months to Shs7,290 a litre. For Ugandan businesses, generator fuel now costs roughly Shs2,041–2,916 per kWh before maintenance, which shifts solar and battery payback and should trigger a calm re-run of backup power and fleet fuel budgets.

Kampala diesel prices reached Shs7,290 a litre at the end of October, up from Shs4,700 in April, according to Daily Monitor. That is a 55% increase in six months, with upcountry stations reporting Shs7,150–7,200. For a 50-litre tank, the fill moved from Shs235,000 to Shs364,500, an extra Shs129,500.

Why this matters beyond the pump

Diesel is the default energy source for heavy transport, tractors, construction equipment and standby generators across manufacturing, hotels, telecom towers and processing mills. The price change therefore affects backup power and logistics budgets at the same time.

The new cost of diesel backup power

A diesel generator burns roughly 0.28–0.40 litres per kWh depending on load. At Shs7,290 per litre, that is Shs2,041–2,916 per kWh in fuel alone, with a midpoint around Shs2,480. At April's Shs4,700, the fuel-only range was about Shs1,316–1,880. Uganda's commercial grid tariff is roughly Shs546–720 per kWh, so diesel backup now costs about 3.5–5 times the grid price per unit. Do the arithmetic on your own runtime

A 100-litre generator runtime at the current price costs about Shs729,000 in fuel before maintenance; the same 100 litres at April's price was Shs470,000. Use your own monthly litres to size the impact.

Decisions this should trigger now

Re-run solar and battery payback

The rise in diesel fuel cost is one of the largest variables in a solar or battery storage calculation. If a system can reduce generator hours during grid outages, the avoided fuel cost per kWh has just increased sharply. One financing structure now in the Ugandan market offers fully-financed, on-site solar-plus-battery through 10–25 year pay-for-consumption or fixed-lease agreements with no upfront capital. That does not make every project viable, but it lowers the barrier to a fresh calculation. Our guide to zero-upfront solar in Uganda explains the structure.

Shift critical loads off generators

Not every generator load is equal. In many operations, a small set of critical loads, refrigeration, IT, security, water pumps, key lighting, drives most of the runtime cost, while non-essential equipment quietly adds fuel use. The first step is to separate critical from discretionary load, then cost each separately. This is a decision method, not a recommendation to buy anything specific. See how to estimate what one hour of grid outage actually costs a Ugandan business.

Right-size fleet and haulage exposure

The same 55% rise flows directly into transport, tractors and construction equipment. If you operate vehicles, now is the moment to re-check fuel cost per kilometer, route efficiency and payload utilisation rather than absorbing the increase silently. Our commercial fleet TCO in Uganda guide shows how to calculate the real cost per kilometre without vendor bias.

What to do before committing capital

Do not make a large backup power or fleet decision on a single day's diesel price. Instead, re-run your numbers under at least three scenarios: diesel stays near Shs7,290, diesel returns to April levels, or diesel rises further. Then test whether the decision still makes sense across the range. For supply, review your diesel purchasing contract with a calm eye on delivery terms, pricing mechanism and minimum volume commitments. If your usage is variable, be cautious about locking fixed high-volume purchases just to secure a headline price.

Avoid the expensive mistakes

Do not hoard fuel in unapproved storage or over-commit to a single technology based on a price spike. The goal is a defensible operating plan, not a reaction to one week of market movement.

Frequently asked questions

Why did diesel rise 55% in six months?
Kampala diesel rose from Shs4,700 in April 2026 to Shs7,290 in late October 2026, with upcountry stations at Shs7,150–7,200. The article focuses on what that means for business operating costs rather than the cause of the market move.
How much does diesel generator power cost per kWh now?
A diesel generator burns roughly 0.28–0.40 litres per kWh depending on load. At Shs7,290 per litre, that is Shs2,041–2,916 per kWh in fuel alone, about 3.5–5 times Uganda's commercial grid tariff of Shs546–720 per kWh.
Does the diesel rise make solar and battery storage more attractive?
It changes the payback calculation in solar's favour, especially where a system reduces generator hours. But installed cost, battery cycles, demand profile and financing still decide whether a project is viable. Re-run the payback rather than assume.
What should a business using diesel generators do first?
Separate critical loads from non-essential loads, calculate fuel use per kWh at the new price, and re-run solar or battery payback under three diesel price scenarios before committing capital.
How should fleet owners respond to a diesel price surge?
Re-check fuel cost per kilometre, route efficiency and payload utilisation. Review fuel purchase contracts for pricing mechanism, delivery terms and minimum volume commitments, and avoid over-committing on fixed high-volume orders if usage is variable.
